    The Vertex Companies, Inc. (VERTEX) is looking for an experienced Industrial Hygienist to join the Industrial Hygiene & Building Sciences team for our Ft. Lauderdale, Florida office.  We are seeking industrial hygienists experienced and certified in Industrial Hygiene exposure monitoring, indoor air quality monitoring, and Asbestos and Mold sampling and mitigation management.  VERTEX is a rapidly growing, multi-national consulting firm that is experiencing exponential growth, and we’re looking to augment our team of talented individuals. The individual we are looking for will enjoy the challenge of working on multiple projects on a fast-paced schedule, working with senior staff, and providing field oversight on a variety of projects. More specific details are described below.

    Industrial Hygienist

    Core Responsibilities

    • Conduct industrial hygiene evaluations, to include indoor air quality monitoring, chemical exposure monitoring, noise, health and safety training, and comprehensive industrial hygiene.
    • Conduct/Direct field investigations activities, including indoor air quality, industrial/occupational hygiene evaluations, asbestos sampling, mold evaluations, water intrusion and waterborne/airborne pathogens.
    • Oversee and review Industrial Hygiene/Asbestos/Mold/Indoor Air Quality-related litigation and insurance claims.
    • Asbestos, Lead-in-Paint, Regulated Materials/Universal Waste, Mold, and Water Intrusion.
    • Asbestos abatement oversight and air monitoring
    • Collect indoor air samples.
    • Analyze laboratory and engineering data.
    • Write claim review and summary reports for senior review.
    • Represent VERTEX to the client in a professional manner.
    • Schedule and coordinate subcontractor activities for project.
    • Prepare and implement Health and Safety Plans for the site where required.
    • Make employee safety a priority both in-house and on-site, in accordance with corporate policy.

     Position Requirements

    • 3-5 years of experience in the comprehensive field of industrial hygiene, including chemical exposure monitoring using real-time and battery-operated sampling pumps.
    • Experience in the execution of Asbestos and Mold Assessments.
    • Frequent travel and/or field work (valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required).
    • Seek opportunities to expand client services with existing and new clients as part of ongoing business development.
    • Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with co-workers, clients and subcontractors.
    • Able to work with minimal oversight, but take direction from Senior managers.
    • Able to meet deadlines, both internally and externally.
    • Other project duties as assigned by senior staff.

    Qualifications

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in a Science-related field, Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related environmental field.

    Experience

    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in technical activities directly related to industrial hygiene-related activities, asbestos, lead-in-paint, mold/moisture intrusion, including report writing.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Must be able to perform complex tasks and handle multiple priorities, and have the ability to perform exceptionally under high stress conditions.
    • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe) required.
    • Proficiency or working knowledge of CAD a plus.

     Special

    • State of Florida certification as an Asbestos Inspector, Asbestos Air Monitor, and/or Asbestos Project Designer
    • Professional education in Mold-related assessments
    • Position requires Health & Safety Certification pursuant to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER 40 Hour) – training provided if required.
    • OSHA 10 or 30-Hour training is preferred, training provided if necessary.

    Physical Requirements

    • Walk job sites during inspections, sometimes on uneven terrain.
    • Carry field testing equipment (up to 30 pounds) onto job sites with regularity.

     INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST -- NIOSH FELLOWSHIP POSITION

                               Location:  FIELD RESEARCH BRANCH, CINCINNATI, OHIO

    WHAT IS NIOSH? – The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a multidisciplinary research institute of the federal government that was established in 1970 to conduct research and make recommendations for the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries. NIOSH is one of the centers of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NIOSH is currently recruiting for a research industrial hygienist through the CDC fellowship program to work.

    FIELD RESEARCH BRANCH – We conduct occupational health and exposure research. The results are used to help make industry wide recommendations regarding safe levels of exposure in the workplace and are accomplished by conducting mortality/morbidity and exposure assessment studies to

    (a) characterize workplace exposures,

    (b) identify the occupationally related causes of disease in the working population,

    (c) determine the incidence and prevalence of acute and chronic effects from work related exposures to toxic and hazardous substances, and

    (d) provide information needed to develop recommendations to reduce workplace exposures and illnesses and standards for the control of occupational health hazards.

    DESCRIPTION OF POSITION – The candidate for this position will conduct independent occupational exposure research conducting industry-wide studies of hazardous agents. The responsibilities of the position include: 

    ·         assist in identifying and establishing study related points of contact,

    ·         organize and support industrial hygiene sampling and exposure assessment field studies,

    ·         develop exposure assessment study protocols,

    ·         participate in and oversee exposure data collection in field studies,

    ·         analyze data, and

    ·         write scientific manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.

    The studies will likely focus on exposures of firefighters, nail salons, and other service workers. Other studies will focus on occupational exposures to chemical agents that are concurrently being tested by the National Toxicology Program. Some travel will be necessary for field studies and scientific meetings (<20%). This is a full time position being offered as part of the CDC service fellowship program under Title 42 of the U.S. Code. CDC service fellows are considered federal employees with most of the rights and benefits provided to permanent employees. The initial fellowship appointment will be for two years. Salary will be based on education and experience. A candidate with a master’s degree will start at the GS-9 with eligibility for GS-11 at one year. Candidates at the PhD level will start at the GS-12 level. Fellows will be eligible for government health and retirement benefits.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED – The successful applicant will have at least a Masters of Science in industrial hygiene or related field with a solid educational background in some, or all, of the following disciplines: exposure assessment, toxicology, risk assessment, biochemistry, and statistics. In addition, the selected fellow will have excellent analytic skills and written and verbal communication skills. Experience in industrial hygiene/exposure assessment methodologies and a doctorate are desirable.

    •Candidates should also have experience in performing independent evaluations of work environments and industrial processes (e.g. thermal stressors, noise, toxicology, biohazards, ergonomic) involving potentially hazardous environment conditions, analysis of findings and provide recommendations of corrective measures (e.g. non‐engineering controls and engineering controls).

    What You'll Do

    The following are some of the responsibilities of the National Account IH Services Consultant that would be located preferably in Charlotte, NC; secondary locations include Atlanta, GA or Greensboro, NC. Travel responsibilities would include the eastern seaboard and gulf coast.  

     

    • Act as a Team Leader and conduct industrial hygiene field consultation service (noise, air quality, IAQ, etc.) for National Accounts customers.  Provide industrial hygiene services for standard commercial lines customers, underwriting, and fee service customers at the request of IH or Safety Services management.
    • Anticipate, recognize, evaluate potential health hazards, and assist customers by recommending proper controls for ACGIH and OSHA guidelines. 
    • Review, assist with development and/or coordinate specific risk improvement or regulatory mandated programs.  Coordinate the implementation of these programs with the customer and the safety services consultant.
    • Provide technical expertise for the development of industrial hygiene-related technical bulletins or information sheets. 
    • Provide training for customers, safety services consultants, or Sentry Insurance employees in industrial hygiene-related areas.
    • Assist sales and underwriting by providing information about prospective customer's processes and potential exposures on conditions that may lead to occupational disease as directed by Industrial Hygiene Management.
    • Assist Sentry Insurance claims department with review or evaluation of occupational disease claims that may have arisen from specific process or workplace exposures.
    • Maintain and calibrate field equipment on a scheduled basis.  Ensure that field work is done in a timely and professional manner.

    What it Takes

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent within the Safety Sciences area is required (i.e., Industrial Hygiene, Degree in Analytical Chemistry, or a related science and/or engineering field).
    • 3+ years of related work experience.
    • M.S. Degree in industrial hygiene, or occupational and environmental health preferred.
    • Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene in the comprehensive practice or other specialty aspect of industrial hygiene is preferred. or a willingness to achieve the CIH Designation in 3 – 5 years.
    • Demonstrated competency in field consultation and familiarity with current industrial hygiene technology.
    • Leadership skills, proactive attitude, proficient technical writing and communication skills.
    • An acceptable motor vehicle record and ability to perform extensive travel is required (50% - 75% travel).
